
"As long as we have a large banking system, capital markets will not develop." This was a very strange comment from a European Commission representative during a panel discussion on the implementation of Basel 3.
The path indicated and pushed by the Commission is that of disintermediation, a direction widely shared since the 2008 crisis. The ‘originate to distribute’ model has become widespread, with some major banks even making it their mantra.
However, the revolution has not taken place: 85% of corporate financing needs are met by credit institutions in Europe, compared with 35% in the United States.
