The UK faces a significant challenge in retrofitting its housing stock for better energy efficiency, with over half of homeowners unaware of their property’s Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating. Atom has stepped up to address this issue by introducing the Retrofit Explorer, a user-friendly tool designed to empower homeowners with tailored energy-saving solutions.
Why EPC ratings matter for homeowners
An EPC rating indicates a property’s energy efficiency, with higher ratings translating to lower energy bills and increased property value. Atom’s research reveals that 53% of UK homeowners are unaware of their home’s EPC rating, while 62% lack a clear understanding of the system. Despite this, 68% believe that improving their EPC rating is a worthwhile investment, recognizing the long-term benefits of energy savings and property value enhancement.
Lower-rated homes, such as those classified as EPC D, consume more energy, leading to higher costs. On average, homeowners with EPC D properties spend £723 more annually on energy bills compared to those with EPC C ratings.
The true cost of retrofitting
A common misconception is that retrofitting is prohibitively expensive, with many believing it costs over £25,000. Atom’s findings suggest otherwise: moving from an EPC D to a C can cost as little as £1,500 while delivering significant annual savings on energy bills.
How Atom’s Retrofit Explorer helps
The Retrofit Explorer tool simplifies the retrofitting process by offering homeowners personalized improvement plans tailored to their budgets. It also connects users with local tradespeople, making energy-efficient upgrades more accessible and affordable.
Edward Twiddy, Director of ESG at Atom, highlights the tool’s impact: “Investing a small amount can save hundreds annually, boost home values, and reduce carbon emissions. With the Retrofit Explorer, homeowners can align financial savings with sustainability goals.”
