Innovation presentation
The core of this innovation is an open innovation collaboration with the startup Mitigrate AS, which has developed a software platform for property risk assessment. The platform provides relevant mitigation actions based on each property’s risk profile. We leverage the insights from Mitigrate to offer precise guidance to our customers—both before and after a claim incident.
Our primary objective is claims prevention. By reducing customers’ risk exposure to extreme weather, we not only help them avoid claims but also enhance their overall experience. For us as an insurer, this leads to fewer claims payments and increased profitability. In addition, we want to be an actor that contributes to a more robust and resilient society over time. In order to achieve this, it is essential to know which measures to implement at an individual level, which the innovation solution assists with.
We developed this innovation to create a compelling value proposition for customers at high risk of flood damage. This initiative aims to improve customer satisfaction, reduce churn, and lower damage costs.
To our knowledge, no similar solution exists in the Norwegian market. While we anticipate that such solutions will become standard offerings for insurers in the future, we currently benefit from a first-mover advantage.
The inspiration for this project came through engagement with climate tech startups in Norway. Fortunately, we found a highly relevant partner through a Norwegian startup incubator.
Internally, several departments contributed to this open innovation initiative. The project was led by our Group Innovation department, in close collaboration with the Property Product team and claims appraisers. Strong internal engagement and broad stakeholder alignment have been key success factors.
So far, we have conducted two paid pilot programs, which resulted in signing a commercial agreement for full-scale implementation within our organization. Currently, the solution is deployed in Norway, with the option to expand to Denmark and Sweden. The results have been highly positive: our claims handlers use the mitigation insights to advise customers on how to rebuild more resiliently after claims. Customer feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing appreciations for receiving actionable, trustworthy information on mitigation measures.
