Innovation presentation
The Infinito Mare project is a Nature-Based Solution (NBS) created to regenerate urban ecosystems through bioengineered floating structures that stimulate controlled growth of algal biofilms capable of capturing pollutants, improving oxygenation, and generating high-resolution scientific data. It is an innovation that positions Zurich as a pioneer in applied environmental regeneration, connecting science, technology, education, and social impact.
The proposal arises from a key question: how can the insurance sector act preventively in the management of climate and environmental risks before they become insured losses? The answer was to create a modular urban artifact that combines:
• Natural bioremediation + scientific sensors + laboratory analyses
• Remote satellite monitoring (Sentinel-2 + ACOLITE)
• eDNA for non-invasive biodiversity reading
• Circular economy as a destination for environmental liabilities
• A structured educational program that trains new generations on climate and water issues
The project integrates multiple areas: Zurich's Innovation and ESG, Infinito Mare (environmental Deep Tech), leading national universities, local government, and social partners. This ecosystem creates a new model of regenerative impact that goes beyond traditional corporate sustainability actions.
For comparison: 4 Infinito Mare Caravelas neutralize 1 ton of CO2 in 5 years, while 6 trees achieve the same goal in 20 years.
The results make the project even more innovative: increased biodiversity, generation of unprecedented data, engagement of more than 2.6 million people in the media, youth training, and scientific measurement of social impact. The solution proves to be scalable, replicable, and with a strong social license, paving the way for new applications in Brazilian and Latin American cities.
