BBVA launches fully digital bank in Germany
Expanding its European digital footprint.
BBVA has launched a fully digital bank in Germany, marking its second digital expansion in Europe after its Italian rollout in 2021. Previously operating only through its Corporate & Investment Banking business in Germany, BBVA now brings retail banking services to the market with a mobile-first offer. The move builds on the bank’s digital strategy, which has already attracted over 700,000 customers in Italy, with a target of reaching one million there by 2026.
“We’re bringing something new to Germany. A banking experience that combines the simplicity and convenience of a fee-free account with the full range of products and reliability of a universal bank,” said BBVA CEO Onur Genç.
A simple offer with few conditions
BBVA Germany’s core offer includes a fee-free checking account paying three percent interest for the first 12 months, with no requirements to purchase additional products. Customers also receive a debit card offering three percent cashback on all purchases, both in-store and online, valid for the same period. Both the interest and cashback are paid monthly, and all services come without fees or subscriptions.
Additional features include free access to cash at around 70,000 ATMs and withdrawal points across Germany, instant SEPA transfers, direct debits, and a fully digital account switching service. The bank also offers flexible financing solutions, including installment plans for purchases, one-click personal loans, and an overdraft facility.
Technology and human support combined
BBVA’s app aims to deliver fast and secure payments, real-time updates, and smart spending tools. New cards in Germany will feature no printed data and a dynamic CVV for added digital payment security. Customers have access to 24/7 German customer service, with English support available daily.
This launch positions BBVA to tap into Germany’s digital-savvy population with a model combining fintech simplicity and the security of a global bank.
