ASB Card Control is a self-service solution that gives ASB Visa credit and debit cardholders the ability to lock certain types of transactions to offer increased security and complete control over how they choose to use their cards.

ASB Card Control is a self-service solution that gives ASB Visa credit and debit cardholders the ability to lock certain types of transactions to offer increased security and complete control over how they choose to use their cards. Located within ASB’s mobile app, ASB Card Control customers can lock certain transaction types and unlock when needed. If a transaction is attempted while a transaction type is locked, an instant notification is sent to the customer’s mobile phone to notify them.
The ASB mobile banking app is available for iOS, Android and Windows Phone and settings are updated immediately in real time.
The types of transactions that can be locked are contactless transactions (Visa payWave), online transactions, overseas transactions and ATM cash withdrawals. Customers can also set a spending limit per transactions (minimum NZ$100) and can place a full block on all card transactions if their card is misplaced.
Cardholders can also use Card Control to add or update a card PIN. The ability to cancel and replace lost, stolen or damaged cards is also being considered as a future enhancement.
A number of teams were involved in the development of this capability. The project was led by the business owner, ASB’s Product team. A number of teams across the organisation collaborated in the development and launch including, Product (business owner), Project Delivery, Payments, Digital, Technology, Sales and Service teams, Marketing and PR.
Uniqueness of the project
No other bank in New Zealand offers this level of credit card functionality or the ability to completely customise card use. Contactless transactions are relatively new to the New Zealand market and while rates of adoption have been rising quickly, some customers are still not yet comfortable with everyday use. Based on this feedback, we decided to give the ability to turn off contactless transactions through ASB Card Control. It is a world-first to offer the ability to turn off contactless transactions. ASB Card Control provides a base to deliver more functionality and continuous improvement to the credit card section of the mobile app. Since launch, further functionality has been added including the ability to load or change a PIN for Visa credit and debit cards, and adding the ASB True Rewards loyalty card.
As the New Zealand market has become saturated with credit card campaigns based on earning rewards, with a particular focus on airline reward miles, ASB has sought to differentiate by focusing on innovation and offering superior functionality and will use Card Control to underpin the cards value proposition.
