Innovation presentation
Generali Act4Green (GA4G) is Generali Italia's flagship project for environmental sustainability, with the ambitious goal to plant 1 MLN trees across Italy, enrich biodiversity and accelerate decarbonization from operational activities. Developed in collaboration with the Leone Alato Group – the agri-food holding company of the Generali Group – GA4G is developed into two main initiatives: Future Radici and Oasi Gregorina.
The first, Future Radici, aims to plant 1 million trees in Italy – over 100 per employee – by the first half of 2026, across more than 1000 hectares within 5 estates owned by the Leone Alato Group (Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Emilia-Romagna, Lazio, and Calabria), as well as other smaller plots. The planting project focuses on the long-term growth of trees (about 60 years), and, unlike other seemingly similar initiatives, will also involve the ongoing maintenance of the forest. Designed based on detailed agronomic studies conducted in collaboration with the Invernizzi Agri LAB | SDA Bocconi School of Management, it includes indigenous tree species suited to the specific pedo-climatic characteristics of the areas. It also plans to create additional wetlands to enhance biodiversity. The project was presented as a best practice at COP 16 on Biodiversity in Cali (Colombia) held at the end of 2024. The initiative aims to create "ecosystem services" for both current and future generations (improving air quality, boosting biodiversity, recreational spaces, etc.), while accelerating the decarbonization of Generali Italia's operations. Starting from 2027/2028, the forest will generate carbon credits certified by third-party independent bodies along the entire supply chain to offset emissions that cannot be further reduced, in line with Generali Group’s decarbonization targets.
The second pillar, Oasi Gregorina, was announced in April 2024 at an event in Rome under the patronage of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, attended by the Minister of Agriculture and senior representatives from the Ministry of Environment. It involves the opening of a WWF-affiliated Oasis within the National Oasis System, located in Castrocaro Terme and Terra del Sole (FC), on the Leone Alato Group’s estate. Oasi Gregorina aims to combine the traditional agricultural vocation of the estate, based on sustainable practices and organic farming, with the following objectives: 1. Environmental education through visits, pathways, and exhibitions aimed at raising awareness about ecosystem and biodiversity conservation; 2. Protection of biodiversity and a variety of animal and plant species in different habitats (forest, vineyard, and honey meadow), preserving the balance between agricultural practices and the surrounding nature; 3. Social and immersive experiences for schools, families, employees, and the Third Sector, including setups that encourage shared experiences. The design pillars guiding the creation of Oasi Gregorina are: 1. Eco-compatible choices in construction techniques and materials, aimed at minimizing the environmental impact of the interventions and fostering dialogue with the local context and production fabric; 2. Accessibility and inclusion, ensuring the experience is accessible to all through collaboration with various stakeholders and professionals in the sector; 3. The use of technological solutions to enhance the visitor experience, promoting a deeper understanding of environmental issues.
Both Future Radici and Oasi Gregorina are showcased in the Generali Act4Green website*, designed with the goal of combining sustainability and accessibility. This sustainable-by-design website was built to be accessible to all types of users, utilizing a low environmental impact server and defaulting to Dark Mode to reduce screen energy consumption and decrease the associated CO₂ emissions from online browsing.
Reasons Behind: Sustainability and social responsibility are deeply embedded in Generali Italia’s DNA. As a core value, Generali strives to act as a Responsible Insurer, Employer, Investor, and Corporate Citizen. Sustainability is the guiding principle (originator) of our business, shaping the way every decision is made and leading Generali to be a transformative, generative, and impact-driven company, capable of creating shared value in the long term for all stakeholders. This commitment is reflected in Generali’s the three-year strategic plan “Lifetime Partner 27: Driving Excellence”, where sustainability is one of the main pillars enhancing the value of people and planet. Generali Act4Green is part of Generali’s strategy to act as a Responsible Corporate Citizen, engaging the community to improve and return value to the territories and people with whom it operates (purpose). Oasi Gregorina offers a valuable educational experience to various stakeholders, with particular attention to younger generations (through schools, NGOs, after-school programs, families, etc.). The enrichment of the vegetation – and the resulting enhancement of biodiversity, including animal life – provide ecosystem services to the entire community, with a positive impact on public health as well. Generali Act4Green-Future Radici was also projected in line with our Climate Strategy goals: to reduce emissions from internal operational activities by at least 60% by 2030. Indeed, in parallel with reduction actions (energy efficiency in offices, reduction of business travel, water, and waste management, etc.) To accelerate the achievement of this goal Generali Act4Green | Future Radici introduces a compensation scheme for the residual emissions of Generali Italia through the generation of carbon credits certified along the entire supply chain by an independent third-party organization.
State of Competition: At Generali Italia we are future-oriented and firmly believe in investing in transversal innovation. This commitment drives us to continuously scout and integrate advanced technologies at every stage of GA4G, from website creation to monitoring planting, agricultural operations, and the needs of species within the Oasi. Our innovation efforts extend beyond sustainability to encompass accessibility, inclusion, diversity, and responsibility in every aspect of the project’s development and execution. This holistic approach ensures that the innovation embodied in GA4G stands unparalleled, setting it apart from any other similar projects.
Sources of Inspiration: Generali Act4Green aims to be a forward-thinking initiative, a breakthrough in the approach to corporate sustainability, grounded in a scientifically sound foundation. The work of Invernizzi AgriLab | SDA Bocconi, our scientific partner, has been a key influence on the project. The lab’s focus on analyzing and developing sustainability solutions in areas such as resource management, energy efficiency, waste reduction, and the environmental impact of agricultural practices aligns closely with Generali’s values. This shared vision led us to collaborate and invest in natural capital to create both environmental and social value for our country and our company. The work of WWF Italia ETS, particularly in the WWF National Oases System, has also been a significant inspiration for Generali. This initiative is vital for protecting the natural environment in Italy while promoting sustainability and raising awareness about the need to preserve our natural heritage. The WWF National Oases System serves as a model of conservation, demonstrating how the protection of ecosystems can go hand-in-hand with agricultural production. Environmental education has been a cornerstone of our project, and Oasi Gregorina now stands as a site for both educational activities and awareness-raising efforts, where scientific research on biodiversity and ecosystem preservation contributes to the safeguarding of our natural heritage.
Departments involved: The transversal nature of GA4G required collaboration of many departments within the Generali Italia such as: Country Sustainability & Social Responsibility, Leone Alato - Genagricola, Communications, IT, Legal, Privacy, CX Design, and Facility. The aim was to recognize the expertise of each department and ensure every step of the project was addressed and managed by the most competent individuals within our company.
