On its bicentennial, Banco do Brasil (BB) took a bold step toward the future by implementing, in 2022, a long-term, centrally distributed Data Governance strategy, data management guidelines, and IT sector training. In 2024, the bank evolved toward the integration of a Data, Analytics, and AI Ecosystem, transforming how BB manages and utilizes its data. As a benchmark financial institution inspired by the Trusted-based Governance framework from Gartner, BB designed development processes focused on preparing data for AI, using technological tools to execute governance, quality, storage, and information control activities. These initiatives innovate processes, enabling the creation of adaptive and dynamic operational models, automation of processes, increased efficiency, and reduced need for manual intervention allowing pattern and preference identification to enhance customer experience. These innovations refine internal processes and ensure a high level of integrated governance across data, analytics, and AI, fostering greater trust and security in decision-making. To measure its strategy, BB employs the Data Governance Maturity Index (IMGD), Data Readiness Index for AI (PIA), and Analytical Maturity Index (IMA). The bank also utilizes GAIA (Corporate Inventory for data models and products), among others. The adoption of agile methods in the implementation of the data governance strategy enabled more than 100 actions in 2024. Over 630 AI solutions have been developed, boosting operational efficiency, customer experience, and revenue growth. Notable AI and Generative AI success stories include Degraded Area Mapping, Carbon Potential, and ARI (Intelligent Recommendation Area), among others. Furthermore, BB has launched AcademIA BB—the largest AI training program for the entire conglomerate, with more than 24,000 participants—making BB the first Brazilian bank to establish a guide of ethical and responsible AI principles and best practices.
