Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CommBank) has deepened its partnership with Amazon Web Services (AWS) in a five-year strategic agreement aimed at enhancing cloud adoption and accelerating artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities. The collaboration positions AWS as the bank’s preferred cloud provider and marks a significant step in CommBank’s ongoing digital transformation.

Cloud migration and AI-driven customer experiences

By migrating a substantial portion of its workloads to AWS and adopting cloud-native architectures, CommBank aims to simplify its technology infrastructure, enabling faster and more secure delivery of new AI-driven customer experiences. A prime example is the recently launched CommBiz Gen AI messaging service, designed to streamline banking for tens of thousands of business customers. Built on CommBank’s Development Operations (DevOps) Hosting Platform and leveraging the Group Generative.AI Platform, the service moved from concept to production in just six weeks.

Empowering engineers and enhancing security

Rodrigo Castillo, CommBank’s Chief Technology Officer, emphasized the importance of AI and cloud technology in shaping the future of digital banking. “AI is enabling new experiences for customers, allowing us to deliver faster, safer, and more personalized banking solutions. To drive innovation, we must equip our engineers with the right tools and skills,” Castillo said.

AWS, which has partnered with CommBank for over a decade, will continue to support the bank’s cloud modernization and AI initiatives. Jamie Simon, Director of Financial Services at AWS Australia and New Zealand, highlighted the importance of secure and scalable cloud platforms in the financial sector. “AWS provides highly secure, resilient, and flexible cloud solutions to meet the regulatory demands of financial institutions while enhancing performance and customer experience,” Simon noted.

CommBank’s cloud modernization strategy has already doubled its AI models to over 2,000 in 2024, fueling innovations like AI-powered messaging and advanced digital banking features. The partnership also facilitates skill development for CommBank engineers, offering AWS Cloud Certification programs to drive innovation at scale.

With an emphasis on security, efficiency, and AI-driven transformation, CommBank’s expanded collaboration with AWS underscores its commitment to delivering world-class digital banking experiences.
