BBVA has rolled out a completely revamped mobile application in Spain, marking a significant shift in its digital banking strategy. The update introduces a native codebase designed for scalability across all markets, an overhauled visual identity, and a suite of artificial intelligence (AI)–powered features tailored to individual user habits. According to CEO Onur Genç, “Each customer will have their own version of the application,” underscoring the bank’s push toward a customer-centric model.
A faster, customized experience
At the heart of the new app lies a performance boost: BBVA says response times are up to six times quicker than its predecessor. The refreshed interface sports new colors, typography, and layout, but it’s the dynamic personalization that stands out. AI algorithms can reorganize the app’s home screen based on transaction patterns, while Apple Intelligence support will soon allow iPhone 15 Pro and 16 users with Visa cards to design bespoke digital card faces.
Biometric login—via fingerprint or facial recognition—grants immediate access to the integrated wallet. From the moment users open the app, they can view card balances, send payments through Bizum, or retrieve card details (PAN, expiration date, CVV) with a minimum of taps. An “intelligent discreet mode” automatically masks sensitive information to maintain privacy in public settings.
AI-driven financial coaching and savings incentives
Beyond interface tweaks, BBVA’s virtual assistant, Blue, now handles natural-language queries. More notably, a new financial coach analyzes income, expenses, savings, and loans to provide a personalized diagnostic. Users can set goals—whether building an emergency fund or curbing discretionary spending—and receive tailored recommendations, from budgeting tools to category-specific expense reductions.
To encourage healthier saving habits, the app enables “digital piggy banks” and offers a 6% bonus (capped at €20 per month for three months) on amounts regularly set aside from wages, pensions, or benefits. Customers also gain automatic overdraft coverage up to €300 for essential bills, with push notifications and alternative payment suggestions when balances run low.
Roadmap for further innovation
BBVA plans to extend this wave of enhancements throughout the year. Upcoming features will span energy-saving advice, expanded insurance options, and investor-focused tools such as curated funds with built-in education and a first-year loss-protection bonus of up to €300. As digital banking continues to evolve, BBVA’s app overhaul positions the institution at the forefront of personalized, AI-enhanced financial services.
