Innovation presentation

EON’s story started in 1999. The internet created opportunities for people to buy and sell across countries through eBay. Although the marketplace was available online, the payment method was not. All the Philippine banks blocked off online transactions for fear that it was not safe. The Philippine market clamored for a more convenient way to pay and it was then that UnionBank introduced the EON Cyber Account, the Philippines first online payment card. Years later, there was a lot of buzz on EON in online platforms relating to e-commerce. The ones who got an EON when they were 21 years old in 1999, were the same early adopters who became online entrepreneurs and online freelancers. The community discovered ways to use the account beyond its original purpose. They created online content and were endorsing EON even without UnionBank knowing who they were. The community continuously fueled the experiential insights while UnionBank embraced its role of enabling the technology needed to turn the insights into reality. Building on the in-roads paved by the EON Cyber Account, UnionBank pulled out all stops and strategically niched EON as a truly digital bank in 2017, a vital beat in the march towards digital transformation.
