Reaching Gen Z & Gen Alpha, can be difficult for topics traditionally regarded as “boring”. This is how the idea of a Financial Literacy game using Minecraft Education Edition was born. Using gamified pedagogy, RBI presents an unparalleled and captivating learning journey for young learners, broadening and fortifying their financial literacy knowledge. The focus of the game lies on 3 main topics: How a Bank works, Saving & Budgeting and Online Security. Each topic features its own level, with a respective storyline, unique game mechanics, NPC (Non-Player Characters) interactions and engaging quests. In Game 1 the kids gather knowledge about how a bank works and the purpose and benefits of interest. The players take on the role of a mine worker and gain interest on their earned gold as well as protect it from thieves by placing it in the bank. In Game 2 the learning goal is about saving and budgeting. The player takes the role of a merchant who buys and produces ingredients to combine them into products to sell to his customers. However, after an unexpected event he needs to make the right budgeting decisions to keep his business running and by taking out a loan and keeping his savings in the bank, he should be able to overcome adversity. In Game 3 the learning content is focused on the topic of online security. By completing a maze and answering questions to find the correct way out the player is educated about the dangers of the digital world and how to use it responsibly. The gamified environment is perfect to learn about financial topics easily while experiencing exciting adventures, solving riddles and fostering their deep-thinking skills. The key partners are public and private schools that want to broaden the subject of financial literacy among their students. During our visits at multiple schools in Austria and Slovakia, we have managed to greatly engage with the young students during the 50 minutes of playtime of each game. Schools are very open to this modern approach of learning and want to focus more on financial literacy.RBI will continue its journey and by translating the game in different languages it will be used all over Europe and educate many more children on these important topics.
