Innovation presentation
In an era where banking apps have replaced physical bank branches, security threats have followed app users into their personal environments. Discovery Bank's Digital Account Vault and Panic Code offer breakthrough client protection for when digital security must extend beyond the app to protect clients who are at physical risk. This innovation in the Discovery Bank app responds to a global surge in express kidnappings and coercion-based financial crime. These events, once rare, are now a real risk in both developed and emerging markets. Victims are often forced to unlock mobile banking apps and to transfer funds under threat – a terrifying blind spot in digital banking safety. Discovery Bank developed a solution that empowers clients in such high-risk situations. Firstly, the Digital Account Vault allows clients to hide sensitive accounts behind a second layer of protection. Accounts in the Digital Account Vault remain invisible unless their unique security code is used, ensuring no funds can be accessed, even if the device is accessed or the app is opened. Secondly, if coerced to unlock their Discovery Bank app and accounts in the Digital Account Vault, clients can use Panic Code to enter a different, discreet code instead of their regular security code. This initiates: • Real-time fraud monitoring and silent alerts, • Internal threat escalation to the Discovery Bank security team, • Coordination with armed response and law enforcement and sharing the client’s location data. Critically, the alerts are silent, and the Discovery Bank app continues to function normally – deceiving the perpetrator, while notifying security teams to initiate the appropriate response. No other bank in South Africa offers this level of client-initiated, real-time duress protection. Globally, comparable offerings are rare, fragmented, or tied to card authorisations rather than app-based, account-level access. This innovation reflects Discovery Bank’s aim to make people financially healthier and safer, by reimagining the account vault for the digital age and placing access to added security and appropriate protection in the hands of every client.
