Innovation presentation
Over 1.2 billion people in Africa remain uninsured due to poverty and low awareness. We built SOSO CARE as a micro health insurtech and climate health innovation enabling people to finance health insurance using cash or recyclables, turning waste into value to fund healthcare. By linking recycling to healthcare, we use one solution to tackle multiple challenges at once including healthcare access, plastic pollution, unemployment, and the care divide, using agents, USSD, and digital platforms.
By connecting recycling to healthcare, we address multiple systemic challenges at the same time by closing the healthcare access gap, reducing environmental pollution, creating income opportunities, and narrowing the care divide. SOSO CARE transforms everyday waste into a sustainable financing mechanism for health insurance, proving that climate action can directly fund social protection.
To date, we have insured over 70,000 people, empowered 120,000 individuals to recycle more than 800,000kg or about 20 million plastics, and unlocked access to over 4,000 hospitals and pharmacies across Nigeria. We have been featured by BBC and Reuters and recognized by GSMA, World Bank linked programs, UNAIDS, Qatar Foundation, Africa Re, and TotalEnergies. SOSO CARE is scalable, defensible, and investable.
