Hanno Renner is Co-Founder and CEO of Personio. He spoke with Efma’s Boris Plantier about how his company eliminates headaches for HR teams in more than 80 countries.
What led to the creation of Personio?
Personio was founded in 2015 by myself, Roman Schumacher, Arseniy Vershinin and Ignaz Forstmeier. A bit later Jonas Rieke joined the company. The founders team has its roots at the Center for Digital Technology Management (CDTM) in Munich, a hub for a range of successful startups.
The inspiration to start Personio evolved after one of my friends, who at the time was chief technology officer of a company with 100 employees, was having trouble organizing recruitment and payroll processes without any dedicated software. And this is how we came up with the idea of an HR software focused on the needs of SMEs.
Could you present Personio's offer?
Personio is the all-in-one HR software for small- and medium-sized companies, digitizing and automating processes, seamless integrations, and data-driven insights. Based in Munich, Madrid, London and Dublin, Personio’s mission is to make HR processes as transparent and efficient as possible so HR can focus on the most valuable assets in the company: the people. The Personio solution includes human resources, recruiting and payroll and supports all core HR processes every business needs to do. More than 3,000 customers in over 80 countries use Personio.
What's coming next for Personio?
Personio will increase its expansion across Europe and focus on the further development of its cloud-based software, as it builds Europe's leading HR operating system for recruiting, personnel administration and payroll for small and medium-sized companies.

• Further enhancing and deepening the product’s core capabilities, to cover even more processes that support HR teams in their daily work and streamline people operations across their organizations.
• Launching the Personio Marketplace with new integrations in Q2 that will allow customers to automate workflows across tools like Slack, Microsoft Teams and other HR-related software.
• Continuing fast growth across DACH, while doubling down on investments in markets that the business successfully entered in 2020, such as Spain, UK & Ireland, the Nordics and Benelux. In 2021 we will also enter new markets, including France and Italy.
• Doubling international headcount from 500 to 1000 by the end of 2021, across our four offices in Munich (HQ), Madrid, London and Dublin, where our new international sales and engineering hub has been established.
• Launching the Personio Marketplace with new integrations in Q2 that will allow customers to automate workflows across tools like Slack, Microsoft Teams and other HR-related software.
