From AI training to retirement prep, United Overseas Bank (UOB) is making bold investments in its people. The Singapore-based bank has embedded a people-first philosophy – centered on ‘Care, Growth and Trust’ – into every stage of its employee journey. The aim: a strong, efficient and deeply committed workforce built for the long haul.

Training that actually works

At UOB, training isn’t just mandatory – it’s meaningful. The bank has transformed traditionally dry compliance learning into binge-worthy video content under its Mission Compliance program. This move slashed training time from 14 hours to just 3 and earned a 90% approval rating.

Beyond mandatory training, UOB’s Better U Pivot program directly addresses the digital shift reshaping financial services. Tailored for employees impacted by automation, the 12-month program offers upskilling and reskilling opportunities through structured, on-the-job training. With 500 available spots over two years, it's a lifeline for staff looking to transition into future-ready roles.

To support this scale of transformation, UOB has launched the Better U Campus, a 10,500-square-foot facility in partnership with the Singapore Institute of Management. The new space consolidates all of UOB’s development efforts under one roof, complete with training rooms and systems labs tailored for banking professionals. It’s a bold signal that UOB sees long-term human capital development as non-negotiable.

Growing from within: AI and leadership training

Ensuring that employees are empowered and not replaced by AI is another key feature of UOB’s people-centric approach. The bank’s Artificial Intelligence and Data Analytics Centre of Excellence (AIDA CoE), launched in collaboration with the Infocomm Media Development Authority and the National University of Singapore, cultivates AIDA professionals specifically for the finance sector.

Workforce enablement is likewise a major focus of a new partnership with Accenture, aimed at accelerating UOB’s adoption of AI and other advanced technologies. The collaboration will give UOB employees access to training programs designed to build AI fluency and foster a mindset of innovation, helping them apply cutting-edge tools in their day-to-day roles.

The bank has also prioritized leadership incubation, with its Management Associate Program, Leadership Academy and Leadership Acceleration Program forming a solid pipeline for grooming high-potential talent.

Retirement ready with SURF

UOB’s wellbeing initiatives are designed to support employees throughout their working life – and beyond. With its new SURF program – short for Supporting Ur Retirement and Future – the bank is helping older employees prepare for life after work. The two-and-a-half-day workshop series includes sessions on health planning, cognitive enhancement, financial readiness and estate planning, ensuring that staff near retirement age don’t just drift off – they glide out on a wave of support.

This builds on earlier efforts like Gig+U, a retiree employment initiative that’s already opened new doors for seniors, and Gig+U Women, which targets mature women balancing caregiving and work.

Culture rooted in care and appreciation

Work-life balance is a core part of UOB’s HR strategy. The bank offers 90-day unpaid sabbaticals with continued medical and insurance benefits, 10 weeks of paid parental leave, and 24/7 mental health support through the Better Mind Program. It even revamped its Staff Housing Loan benefit to offer the best rates in the market, resulting in a 150% spike in take-up within two months of launch.

Gratitude is also built into the company culture. During its annual Global Appreciation Month, leaders like Deputy Chairman and CEO Wee Ee Cheong personally thank employees across regions, surprising teams in offices and branches. The Better U Festival further cements the bank’s cultural identity, bringing thousands together to celebrate personal growth, wellness and purpose.

Through the UOB Way – a cultural anchor woven through hiring, onboarding, development and leadership – the bank has built a workplace where employees feel valued, equipped and empowered. In an increasingly competitive and automated industry, UOB stands out for its far-reaching investments in its greatest assets – people.
