eHealth, Inc. has rolled out new AI-powered voice agents to revolutionize how customers begin their journey toward selecting the right health insurance plan. The initiative is part of the company’s broader strategy to use artificial intelligence to complement—not replace—its licensed insurance agents, enhancing speed, accuracy, and customer satisfaction.
Initially launched as a pilot in early 2025, the AI voice agents began by handling after-hours Medicare inquiries. The technology has since expanded to support daytime calls, helping to collect personal details, assess eligibility, and provide required disclosures before connecting callers to licensed professionals.
Faster access, higher engagement
According to eHealth, the results have been promising. The AI system has eliminated after-hours wait times and achieved a 100% answer rate. Most notably, the percentage of callers expressing interest in purchasing a plan jumped from 18.5% to 34.5% when interacting with AI agents compared to human screeners.
"AI has the potential to significantly improve the quality and efficiency of the shopping experience," said Ketan Babaria, Chief Digital Officer at eHealth. "It allows us to eliminate waiting times and connect consumers more quickly with licensed experts."
Meeting rising consumer expectations
A recent eHealth survey supports the move toward AI-assisted customer service. Nearly three-quarters of respondents said they would answer questions from an AI assistant to receive faster help. Long hold times, difficulty reaching live agents, and poor service ranked as top frustrations.
The AI voice agents are designed to be user-friendly, empathetic, and accurate—qualities that 60% of callers described as delivering an “exceptional” experience.
As demand for 24/7 service grows, eHealth’s AI agents are set to play a key role in reshaping how consumers shop for Medicare and other health insurance plans.
