Starling Bank rolls out AI tool for personal spending insights

New ‘Spending Intelligence’ feature uses natural language queries.

Starling Bank has launched a new artificial intelligence tool aimed at helping customers better understand their spending habits. The feature, called “Spending Intelligence,” allows users to ask natural language questions within the banking app, such as “How much did I spend on groceries last week?” or “How much did I donate to charity last year?”, and receive instant, personalized analysis.

This is the first time a UK bank has introduced an AI-powered feature enabling customers to interact with their spending data using both text and voice queries. It builds on Starling’s existing Spending tab, which categorizes transactions across more than 50 spending areas.

Making money management easier

According to Harriet Rees, Chief Information Officer at Starling Bank, the aim is to remove a key barrier in personal finance: understanding exactly where money goes. “Knowledge is power, and it’s the first step to taking active control of your money,” she said. The bank views this as part of its broader mission to make financial management an everyday habit for its customers.

The tool also provides suggested prompts based on users’ individual spending patterns. Frequent travelers might be prompted to analyze holiday expenses, commuters to review transport costs, or diners to assess restaurant spending. Customers then receive graphs and analytics summarizing their spending behaviors over time.

Privacy and AI expansion

Spending Intelligence is powered by Google’s Gemini models on Google Cloud, with customer queries analyzed securely within Starling’s infrastructure. Customers must opt in to use the feature and can opt out at any time, with data not used for AI training purposes.

This launch is part of Starling’s wider strategy to integrate AI across its services, having already applied AI tools in areas such as cybersecurity, fraud prevention, and customer support.
