BBVA Innova Challenge is a global “hackathon” (also known as “datathon”) organized by BBVA. A hackathon is an event where data scientists, software engineers and programmers can submit app design projects based on a set of aggregated data released by an entity. BBVA is the first bank in Spain to hold an international app design contest through the provision of an open API (otherwise referred as public API). This API (application programming interface) contains anonymous credit and debit card transaction details processed by point-of-sale (POS) terminals taken from November 2012 to April 2013 in Madrid and Barcelona. The data is 100% unidentifiable, yet it contains a number of important demographic information on BBVA branded payment card holders (e.g. age, gender and category of spending). BBVA Innova Challenge runs from September 24th to December 3rd, 2013 inclusively. The hackathon has 3 major categories, “consumer apps”, “apps for the corporate/ public sector” and “web or visualization”: - “Consumer apps” category: applications that would help mass consumers improve or simplify their daily routines - “Apps for the corporate/ public sector” category: applications that are designed to facilitate decision making process, procedures and processes in companies or the public sector - “Web or visualization” category: creative and unique interpretations or presentations of the open API dataset A sum of 90,000 euros of prize money is given out to the 9 winners of the BBVA Innova Challenge. The winning projects are selected by an expert panel formed by BBVA executives and other Big Data veterans.
