Simply put, we want to be the best digital bank in South Africa, and globally. There is a new customer in town! Banks are now more dedicated than ever to evolve digital banking services to support the unique and individual modern-day customer needs. Rapid technology enhancement, the digital revolution, tech-savvy customers and the overall expansion of the digiverse has created a different customer. A new customer. One with needs and requirements. One with choice. One that is in control of their finances. Should Banks disrupt the status quo? Banking is seen as rigid, regulated and sensitive, and should perhaps not be disrupted too much. We disagree! Fintechs deliberately disrupted the financial ecosystem of the world and we, at Absa, thank them for it. The digital banking revolution provided opportunities for Absa to showcase their readiness for the modern world. For years we have been preparing digital banking solutions with staying power, stability and security as priority. This put us on the front foot, staying ahead of customer expectations of banking. The almost surreal global pandemic tested our resilience. At Absa, we were ready! Servicing the post-pandemic customer, and loving it! One of the few silver linings in the dark, tragic and inconceivable global storm cloud of COVID-19, was the advancement of the digiverse in South Africa, and globally. Apps provided gateways for grocery, medicine and food deliveries. Online doctor consults saved many lives and even families, friends and colleagues turned to digital to meet up. Banking was no different, evident with Absa recording a 34% increase in activity on our digital platforms since 2020. Most importantly, it placed a spotlight on customer behaviour changes and expectations, which inspired us to be world class in our response to customers. Once again, we anticipated the new customer through swift deployment of customer behavioural economics and inspired us to provide the correct response to customer needs. This fell squarely into our overall digital banking strategy of useful and functional features, customer centricity, channel availability, most of all, safe and secure banking. The "Super-App" rat-race. Being the best digital bank does not mean having a Banking App that's overloaded with ridiculous and random features that were thought out in a 9th floor boardroom instead of really knowing what the customers wants. Respecting our customer's concerns over their money is the foundation of our digital operation.
