In October 2017, during Mental Health Awareness Week, AMP developed a mental health awareness training program for staff and AMP advisers. By collaborating with the Black Dog Institute, a mental health research organisation, an online training program was established, with tools to assist in improving the skills and knowledge of employees to engage with people experiencing mental health issues. Topics covered how to manage challenging conversations about mental health, how to take care of your own mental health, and how to help people access the support they need. With one in five Australians experiencing a mental health condition at any given time, AMP is devoted to being an innovative leader in advocating for better outcomes for customers managing mental health issues. We are committed to providing our employees with the important knowledge and skills, so they have the confidence to support colleagues and customers experiencing mental health issues. As we believe understanding mental health is imperative to achieving better outcomes for customers managing mental health issues, this training has been made accessible not just to customer-facing insurance staff, but to Operations, Adviser representatives, Enterprise Risk Management and People & Culture teams. As at 7 March 2019, 842 advisers have completed the training. The number of advisers in November 2017 was 261, meaning the uptake of this training has almost quadrupled in less than eighteen months. This program has been well recognised by the industry, where in 2018, the Financial Services Council awarded AMP the Innovation in Retail Life Insurance award.
