Only 3 clicks to check whether a weather-related claim is really due to weather conditions, so we can provide our policyholders with an immediate and justified response

Innovation presentation

To simplify the management of weather-related claims, Société Générale Assurances has integrated a solution that enables its claims handlers to know the wind speed on a given date and at a small geographical scale. The solution, developed by Weather Claim Control – an insurtech specialized in climate risk assessment -, instantly qualifies the occurrence of a storm, thus allowing to give an immediate answer to the client on what action will be taken following his claim.

If the wind speed qualifies the event as a storm, the claims handling procedure will follow its course. On the other hand, if the wind speed does not indicate the presence of a climatic event, the claims handler will be able to provide the policyholder with a certificate issued in real time by an independent third party to substantiate the decision.

Weather Claim Control models also detect localized wind phenomena, such as convective gusts and tornadoes, to ensure that all events are considered when providing the policyholder with an answer.

Today, the solution developed by Weather Claim Control is used by Société Générale Assurances to accurately model wind speed at a small geographical scale. It could also be used in the future to qualify electrical damage caused by lightning strikes, hail and flooding caused by runoff and heavy rainfall. To give an accurate assessment of the atmospheric conditions at the time of a claim, Weather Claim Control uses several sources of data, including Météo France. Its meteorological engineers have developed a model that selects the weather stations eligible for Weather Claim Control. The model eliminates stations considered atypical, thus providing a very objective and accurate vision of the local intensity of weather phenomena.

The solution, integrated into the claims handler’s desktop, enables Société Générale Assurances to provide the proof of the occurrence of the climatic event, thus relieving the policyholder of this burden at a potentially trying time when his or her household is facing material disasters. In addition to improving customer experience, this new solution brings real benefits for Société Générale Assurances. It helps professionalizing claims handlers, who can rely on objective data to respond to their customers, which brings peace of mind to the processing of claims. They quickly adopted this user-friendly interface after a short training session. Claims handling time is reduced, as the claim is no longer subject to multiple roundtrips between the insurer and the insured, thus improving operational efficiency. On average, the solution saves 20 minutes of processing time per claim.

What's more, against a backdrop of rising costs linked to weather-related events, the solution enables claims to be paid for 100% of covered events and only those events. The cost of storm-related claims is thus significantly reduced, with a positive impact on the company's financial balance.

Last but not least, the solution is also of interest to appraisal firms working with Société Générale Assurances, as they only receive weather-related claims and can therefore concentrate on appraising damage caused by proved weather-related events.

The project to implement the solution, strongly supported by the Executive Management because of its benefits both for customers and the company, followed the classic pattern of an open-innovation project. Once Weather Claim Control had been sourced by the innovation department, a study phase enabled a business case to be drawn up with the Claims Department, which then led to a pilot phase. This pilot phase allowed the project team to validate the hypotheses necessary for generalization. It was not necessary to wait until the end of the pilot phase before deciding to go to scale!

Uniqueness of the project

The solution developed by Weather Claim Control is currently the only one that provides an immediate answer to the clients, based on data measured during climatic events and available the day after the event for claims handlers.
