In 2022, Carrefour Bank embarked on an ambitious journey to redefine the future of financial services with the creation of Tessera — an innovative Data Lakehouse built on Google BigQuery. The name “Tessera,” inspired by the Greek word for “four” (a nod to the four fundamental data blocks), symbolizes the initiative’s mission to overcome critical barriers to innovation:
Fragmented Data: Information silos hindered a unified view of the customer.
Limited Scalability: The legacy infrastructure couldn't keep up with exponential data growth.
Slow Processes: Developing new models and products was overly time-consuming.
High Costs: Maintaining legacy systems drained valuable resources.
Tessera marked a turning point, centralizing over 700 tables and 600TB of data into a unified, scalable environment built for the AI era. This ambitious project brought together teams from Data Architecture, Data Governance, Data Engineering, Data Science, Analytics, Analytical Engineering, and multiple business areas, alongside consulting partners — a collaboration that was crucial to Tessera’s success.
