Revolut just took aim at telcos — and this could redefine the fintech playbook
With unlimited domestic calls, texts, and data, plus a 20GB roaming allowance across Europe and the U.S., this move could send shockwaves through both the telco and fintech sectors.
Revolut is no longer content to just disrupt banks — it’s coming for telecoms next. The $33B digital banking juggernaut has announced the upcoming launch of Mobile Plans, its boldest non-financial product to date. With unlimited domestic calls, texts, and data, plus a 20GB roaming allowance across Europe and the U.S., this move could send shockwaves through both the telco and fintech sectors.
Why mobile, why now?
Launching first in the UK and Germany, Revolut’s plans are priced aggressively at just £12.50/month with no fixed contracts — a direct challenge to mobile carriers long criticized for high roaming fees and rigid terms. Customers can choose a new Revolut-issued number or port an existing one, all from within the app. Deep integration means usage tracking, plan management, and even payments via RevPoints, Revolut’s loyalty rewards system, are handled in-app — no third-party friction.
eSIM was the test — This is the expansion
Revolut already dipped a toe into telecom with global eSIMs, rolled out in 2024. The response? Millions of plans activated in over 100 countries, making it Revolut’s top-performing non-banking product. With this track record, the leap into full mobile connectivity feels less like a side hustle and more like a calculated land grab — with the telco customer experience ripe for reinvention.
Fintech is no longer just about finance
“The mobile experience is broken — and we’re fixing it,” said Hadi Nasrallah, Revolut’s GM of Telco and Retail. His bet: that a fintech-born, UX-obsessed, contract-free mobile service can outmaneuver legacy providers still clinging to outdated systems and opaque pricing.
For financial services leaders, the message is clear: the lines between fintech, lifestyle, and now telecom are blurring fast. And Revolut is drawing the blueprint.
