About
Atom is an in-house self-assessment tool released as part of a commitment to transform the ways in which colleagues learn.
Innovation presentation
User research showed people respond better to casual conversation than long, multi-page forms. Consequently we developed a dynamic chatbot that would guide users through the assessment. On completion colleagues are guided to their own personal learning dashboard where they’re able to not only see their own results, but also overlay the average capability across group and desired levels of capability within each area.
Combined with the ability to see requirements for upcoming roles it gives colleagues the information necessary to make an informed decision about where they invest their learning hours. All anonymously, to strengthen the validity of the results. Further down the dashboard colleagues can access bespoke learning content related directly to their level in each capability.
After finishing any learning content users can retake specific capabilities in order to update their results and relevant learning content. This continuous loop of learning combined with the private nature of the tool received much praise from colleagues.
Uniqueness of the project
Starting by building an understanding of colleague and business needs through a series of depth interviews, alongside internal/external research into different case studies in the diagnostic space, we moved to mocking up several paper and online prototypes. Our user research showed people respond better to casual conversation than long, multi-page forms. Consequently we developed a dynamic chatbot that would guide users through the assessment. The use of branching paths in the dialogue allowed us to condense the amount of time it took to complete through only asking the necessary questions. Information is also provided contextually from user input so colleagues only need to ask if they want something in more detail.
