The implementation of Google's Cloud Platform, Document AI (DocAI), by Banco BPI marks a pivotal shift in how the bank handles document-heavy processes. Initially introduced to enhance the mortgage credit journey, the solution demonstrated strong early results, which opens the path to a broader scope. DocAI is currently being tested and prepared for implementation across 90% of Banco BPI’s document-intensive processes.
The core objective of DocAI is to convert unstructured data into structured, actionable insights using machine learning algorithms. By automating the extraction of key data from documents such as tables, checkboxes and key-value fields, the platform minimizes human intervention, accelerates turnaround times and significantly reduces the margin for error.
The project was undertaken due to the need of modernizing legacy workflows that relied heavily on manual inputs for document analysis. Besides being resource-intensive, these processes slowed down customer service. By implementing AI-powered data extraction and validation, Banco BPI has aligned its operational model with a digital-first, efficiency-driven strategy. Specifically, analyzing the first implemented use case shows that using DocAI has significantly reduced manual involvement in retrieving data from documents in the early stage of the mortgage credit process. This allows employees to focus on more strategic, value-adding activities, such as decision-making and formalizing contracts. At the same time, customers benefit from a faster, more reliable experience.
The competitive landscape in Banking is increasingly shifting toward tech/AI-driven automation. Nonetheless, few institutions have already operationalized this technology in such a strategic and compliant way at scale. Banco BPI has set a new standard by integrating advanced optical character recognition (OCR) and natural language processing (NLP) technologies in live environments, thereby enhancing understanding and categorization. Multiple departments collaborated to build a platform that delivers both quantifiable efficiency gains, and also strengthens Banco BPI’s position as a digitally advanced, client-centric financial institution.
