The Banking Innovation of the Month award for May goes to Millennium bcp’s Corporate Homebanking platform, a practical, user-driven solution simplifying daily banking for Portuguese SMEs.
Small and medium-sized businesses in Portugal – as in many countries worldwide – face significant challenges in managing their finances, resulting in ongoing operational friction. Fragmented visibility of multi-bank accounts, manual reconciliation, difficulty accessing short-term financing, and time-consuming onboarding were among the chief pain points identified by SMEs surveyed by Millenium bcp.
The Corporate Homebanking platform was designed from the ground up to address these issues. Developed over two years with direct input from more than 1,300 SMEs and tested by 5,000 companies, the platform consolidates multiple banking functions into one interface designed for efficiency and clarity.
Businesses can now view and manage accounts across different banks in real time through Open Banking integration, while an AI-powered cash flow forecasting tool provides proactive alerts about upcoming liquidity needs. Payments have been streamlined into a unified hub supporting bulk transactions and instant transfers, and SMEs can secure credit lines up to €15,000 in under four minutes through a fully digital process. The interface is customizable, allowing users to adapt the layout and features to their specific needs.
With the Corporate Homebanking platform, Millenium bcp has become the first among major Portuguese banks to launch a fully modular, AI-enabled banking experience developed from the ground up for SMEs. By integrating tools typically scattered across multiple systems into a single streamlined interface, the bank has made daily banking simpler and smarter for its SME clients, aligning with its goal of becoming the go-to digital branch for companies in Portugal.
The development process involved a number of challenges, including migrating from legacy systems, ensuring regulatory compliance and adapting to diverse business needs. Millennium bcp addressed these through phased testing, parallel system runs and continuous feedback from users. Early hesitancy among some clients was overcome with guided tutorials and direct support from relationship managers.
Since its launch in January 2025, the platform has rapidly proven its worth. With 78% of corporate clients now using digital channels for transactions, the AI cash flow tool has been accessed over 560,000 times this year and the digital credit line has already facilitated €2.6 million in financing. The project has reinforced Millenium bcp’s reputation as a leader in SME banking, with both internal and external research showing high levels of satisfaction among the platform’s users.
By focusing on real pain points and measurable outcomes, Millennium bcp has demonstrated how banking platforms can evolve to better serve businesses. The Corporate Homebanking platform sets a new standard for SME financial tools – one built on collaboration, clarity and tangible improvements to daily operations.
