PasaHERO Protect is an embedded commuter insurance innovation developed by BPI/MS Insurance Corporation in partnership with the GCash platform. GCash, operated by Mynt, is the Philippines' first and only $5 billion "duacorn" (double unicorn), having surpassed a $1 billion valuation to become the nation's leading fintech, boasting over 90 million users. It offers a comprehensive digital ecosystem, including mobile wallets, lending, insurance, and investment, and is recognized as a key driver of financial inclusion in the country.
The initiative addresses a persistent protection gap affecting millions of commuters in the Philippines. Every day, workers, students, and gig-economy participants rely on public transport and motorcycles to move through cities, yet many remain uninsured due to rigid product structures, high upfront premiums, and complex purchase journeys.
Traditional commuter insurance options are often annual-only, offered in a single coverage tier, or require customers to navigate fragmented purchase processes outside the digital environments they already use. These barriers discourage adoption among mass-market customers who are most exposed to commuting risks.
PasaHERO Protect was designed to remove these barriers by embedding protection directly into the GCash ecosystem—one of the most widely used digital financial platforms in the country. Customers access the product through the GInsure marketplace within the GCash app, allowing them to purchase insurance in the same environment where they already perform everyday financial transactions such as payments, transfers, and wallet top-ups.
The innovation lies not only in platform integration but in how the product behaves within the digital wallet environment. Recognizing that GCash users are accustomed to frequent, low-value transactions, PasaHERO Protect offers both monthly and yearly protection options.
Coverage starts at PHP 15 per month, allowing commuters to begin protection at a price point comparable to everyday digital purchases. Customers may also choose yearly plans depending on their preferences and financial capacity.
The product is offered in three tiers:
• PasaHERO Go – PHP 15/month or PHP 100/year (up to PHP 100,000 coverage)
• PasaHERO Plus – PHP 25/month or PHP 200/year (up to PHP 200,000 coverage)
• PasaHERO Max – PHP 40/month or PHP 350/year (up to PHP 500,000 coverage)
By aligning protection with digital wallet spending behavior, the innovation reduces the financial and psychological barriers that often prevent first-time insurance adoption.
The product also reflects real household protection behavior. Customers may purchase coverage not only for themselves but also for other individuals such as family members, partners, or dependents who commute regularly. This design recognizes that protection decisions in the Philippines are often made at the household level.
Automation further simplifies the experience. Once checkout is completed within the GCash environment, policy issuance and communications are triggered automatically, with digital proof of coverage delivered immediately. Policy documents can be accessed anytime through the GInsure policy management interface within the app.
Through this approach, PasaHERO transforms insurance from a complex financial purchase into a simple digital wallet service embedded in everyday financial activity.
The initiative demonstrates how insurers can expand financial inclusion by partnering with digital ecosystems that customers already trust and use daily. By embedding commuter protection inside a digital wallet used by millions, BPI MS created a scalable model for delivering accessible insurance to segments traditionally excluded from insurance markets.
PasaHERO also builds upon earlier innovation by BPI MS in commuter protection. The success of Safe Sakay, a commuter insurance product distributed through the banking ecosystem, validated the demand for mobility-focused protection. PasaHERO extends this concept further by embedding the protection directly within a digital wallet environment, enabling even greater reach and accessibility.
Together, these initiatives demonstrate how commuter protection can evolve from a standalone product into a scalable mobility-linked insurance model embedded within financial ecosystems.
